Gunfire Strikes School Bus in Charlotte, Prompting Quick Response and Community Concern

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An alarming incident took place on Monday, as two students aboard a school bus experienced the terrifying aftermath of gunfire in east Charlotte. The unsettling event unfolded around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Idlewild Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard, sending ripples of concern through the community.

The Incident Unfolds

Authorities were quick to respond when reports of gunfire targeting a school bus surfaced. According to police, the bus, which is operated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), suffered damage from the shooting that left shattered glass in its wake. Specifically, two students were reported injured from the glass debris, although a CMS spokesperson later clarified that only one student sustained injuries. Thankfully, there were no life-threatening situations reported.

In a statement, law enforcement revealed that not only was the school bus struck, but an Infiniti vehicle was also hit. It came to light that the Infiniti involved in the incident had been reported stolen just days before the shooting. The owner of the car shared her heartbreak, noting that she was devastated to hear her stolen vehicle played a role in such a distressing event.

Support for Students and Families

Following the incident, the principal of Albemarle Road Middle School sent a heartfelt message to families, detailing the situation. “A dispute outside the bus led to a shooting which broke a window on the bus. One student on the bus was injured and is being treated by MEDIC,” said Principal Perry. He assured parents that law enforcement was actively investigating the matter and that another bus was dispatched to safely transport the remaining students home.

“It is natural to feel anxious or frightened by incidents like this,” he mentioned. To support students grappling with feelings of fear, crisis counselors will be available at the school. Resources provided by the school include links for parents on how to speak to their children about violence, emphasizing the school’s commitment to safety and well-being.

A Hero Emerges

In the chaos, not all heroes wear capes. One individual, Eyersol Belbuel, a security guard at the nearby Albemarle Road Recreation Center, sprang into action when he heard the shots ring out. Even amidst the chaos, Belbuel’s resolve to ensure the safety of the students did not waver.

“I don’t have the time to think about something,” Belbuel recalled. “I heard somebody say ‘I need help’, and I ran out to assist.” He swiftly opened the bus door, helping students evacuate, some of whom needed urgent care due to their injuries. “I’m keeping her safe and taking her hands and trying to speak to her because she is bleeding a lot,” he noted, emphasizing his determination to help others. For Belbuel, the drive comes from his family. “I have children — that’s why I help everybody,” he expressed.

Community Reflection

As the community reflects on this unsettling event, it highlights the growing concerns surrounding safety in schools and local neighborhoods. While a suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting, authorities have yet to release their identity.

In the coming days, officials will likely provide more updates on the situation, as well as the ongoing investigation. Residents are encouraged to share any information regarding the incident, fostering a community united against violence.

The safety and well-being of students should always be our top priority, and Monday’s events serve as a stark reminder for all. If you or someone you know needs support, reach out to local resources to help navigate these unsettling feelings.
