Gunfire Hits School Bus in Charlotte, Injuring Students
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two students were injured by shattered glass after gunfire struck a school bus in east Charlotte on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Idlewild Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard, while the bus was caught in a shooting between individuals involved in a drug-related dispute.
Incident Details
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) provided an update saying that the bus was not the intended target of the gunfire. Instead, it was struck while two groups clashed nearby. Following the incident, police arrested 21-year-old Lamarius Ramel Anthony, who was found leaving the scene. He is charged with felony possession of cocaine and carrying a concealed weapon, and is currently held on a $9,000 bond.
Injuries Reported
While the police reported two students were injured, a spokesperson from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools clarified that only one student sustained injuries from the broken glass. The injured student was treated by MEDIC, and fortunately, there have been no reports of serious injuries.
Vehicle Involvement
As part of the investigation, officers noted that the school bus and a stolen Infiniti vehicle were both hit by bullets. The owner of the Infiniti, who reported her car stolen just days prior, expressed her heartbreak upon discovering that her vehicle was involved in the tragic event.
Response from School Officials
In the wake of this frightening incident, Principal Perry of Albemarle Road Middle School sent a message to families, reassuring them that safety is the highest priority. He confirmed that law enforcement is actively investigating the situation and that crisis counselors would be available for students in need of support.
Heroic Actions During Emergency
During the chaotic scene, one local security guard, Eyersol Belbuel, quickly ran to action after hearing gunshots. Working at the Albemarle Road Recreation Center, he immediately left to assist those on the bus. Guiding students to safety, Belbuel recounted his actions: “I don’t have time to think about anything. I heard somebody say, ‘I need help.’” He led dozens of children away from danger, attending to one injured student who was understandably frightened and bleeding.
