Scott Michael Waybright, a 58-year-old former assistant head of school for academics at Charlotte Country Day School, was arrested on Friday.
Waybright faces five counts of felony secret peeping and five counts of possessing photographic images obtained in violation of privacy laws. The charges stem from his alleged inappropriate conduct involving taking photos of students and women without their consent.
The incidents occurred primarily at Charlotte Country Day School, where Waybright worked for nearly 30 years. Additionally, some photos were taken in public places such as grocery stores and swimming pools.
The investigation began last year when a teacher reported an incident involving a student who claimed Waybright was taking pictures of her. Waybright was arrested on Friday, with the investigation culminating in this significant discovery.
The school took action after a teacher expressed concerns regarding Waybright’s behavior and felt previous investigations were not thorough. Following the allegations, the school hired a private investigator, which ultimately led to the shocking findings.
A forensic examination of Waybright’s work phone and laptop revealed hundreds of inappropriate photos, including images of women’s legs and buttocks. According to court documents, the investigation identified at least 10 to 12 images of potential students and employees, raising serious concerns.
The arrest has left the local community in shock. One neighbor expressed disbelief, stating, “It was absolutely shocking. We were all overwhelmed by what we heard. It frankly made us completely sick to our stomach.” The neighbor emphasized the disturbing nature of the allegations, particularly given Waybright’s long tenure at a school.
This is not the first time such complaints have been leveled against Waybright. In 2017, a man reported that he suspected Waybright took pictures of his wife in the library, but no evidence supported that claim at the time.
In light of these allegations, Charlotte Country Day School has taken swift action. The school has prohibited Waybright from returning to campus and plans to form a task force to address safety concerns, enlisting national experts in the field. They also intend to hire two additional security personnel to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Waybright appeared in court on Monday with his attorney representing him. He is currently out on bond, awaiting further legal proceedings in connection with these serious allegations.
The situation at Charlotte Country Day School serves as a reminder of the responsibility that educational institutions have to protect their students. The ongoing investigation will certainly determine the course of future actions, both legally and within the school community.
