News Summary

Shane’s Rib Shack in Charlotte received a health inspection score of 85%, marking its third consecutive ‘B’ grade. The inspection revealed multiple violations, including contaminated dishes and improper food handling practices, raising concerns over the safety of patrons. This report highlights the importance of hygiene and food safety standards in local eateries.

Shane’s Rib Shack Faces Health Violations: A Closer Look at the Latest Inspection

In the bustling city of Charlotte, Shane’s Rib Shack, a popular eatery located at 5220 New Fashion Way, has recently been under the microscope following its latest health inspection by the Mecklenburg County Health Department. The inspection, which took place on March 18, resulted in a score of 85%, leading to yet another “B” grade for the restaurant.

This isn’t the first time Shane’s Rib Shack has found itself in hot water when it comes to food safety. Shockingly, the restaurant has faced a series of health violations in its past three inspections. The most troubling issue? The majority of what is supposed to be clean dishes were found contaminated with sticker residue, food debris, and a layer of grease. This not only raises eyebrows but also concerns for the health and safety of patrons.

Other Noteworthy Violations

Alongside the sticky dishes, a few other violations were flagged during the inspection:

  • An employee was caught preparing orders without washing their hands.
  • A dented can of peaches was spotted on the can rack.
  • Sour cream was found in cold holding above the required temperature.
  • A cook line chef was observed without a beard guard.
  • Multiple cases of single-service items were stored directly on the floor.
  • Food debris was noted on food contact surfaces.

These violations not only affect the restaurant’s hygiene rating but also raise questions about food handling practices that could lead to food-borne illnesses. It’s crucial for eateries like Shane’s Rib Shack to prioritize cleanliness and safety, serving delicious food while ensuring the wellbeing of their dedicated customers.

A Pattern of Persistent Issues

This recent inspection marks Shane’s Rib Shack’s third consecutive “B” grade, a trend that began with inspections in October and December of the previous year. It’s evident that improvement is needed if the restaurant hopes to regain the coveted “A” grade, which is awarded to establishments scoring at least 90%.

Mecklenburg County has been proactive about monitoring food safety across its many restaurants. In a week-long span from March 14 to March 20, a total of 139 restaurant inspections were carried out within the county. While the majority of establishments received an “A” grade, a small number of restaurants also faced the same fate as Shane’s Rib Shack.

Comparative Scores in the Neighborhood

For instance, two other eateries in the area also received “B” grades but with slightly higher scores. Queen City Grounds, located at 644 N. Church St., scored 88.5% but had 12 violations, including unwashed fruit and food stored on the floor. Meanwhile, Desi District Restaurant at 11812 Carolina Place Pkwy. achieved an 88% score with 12 violations, including unlabeled spices and dishes stacked wet.

It’s interesting to note that state law dictates that any restaurant receiving a score lower than 70% will have their permits revoked immediately. This harsh rule emphasizes the high stakes involved in maintaining food safety standards.

Protecting Public Health

Mecklenburg County’s inspection scores and the respective letter grades are not merely for show; they are vital for assessing adherence to health standards designed to protect against food-borne illnesses. With incidents like those at Shane’s Rib Shack, it’s a stark reminder for all restaurants to stay vigilant in their sanitary practices.

As a customer, you have the right to know about the hygiene standards of your favorite dining spots. With Shane’s Rib Shack continuing to receive “B” grades, it will be interesting to see how the restaurant addresses these concerns moving forward.

In the end, everyone loves delicious ribs, but it’s essential that food safety is never on the back burner.
