Hey there, Charlotte! If you haven’t heard yet, SouthPark has unleashed a game-changing free ride service known fondly as the SouthPark Skipper. You may find yourself asking, “What’s the catch?” or “How does this whole thing work?” Well, I was just as curious, so I decided to dive into the heart of this brand-new service to discover all the delightful (and not-so-delightful) details.
Launched just in time for holiday shopping, the SouthPark Skipper aims to be a convenient alternative for folks trying to navigate the busy streets of SouthPark. As we all know, finding parking can easily turn into a mini adventure—one that often ends in frustration. This little ride service, operated by a friendly company called Freebee, is all about making your trips easier and more enjoyable.
So there I was, a self-proclaimed transit detective, ready for my undercover mission. After parking at The Apex (good news—0-3 hours is free!), I downloaded the Freebee app, created my rider profile, and requested my first ride. I was buzzing with excitement as I awaited the arrival of my chauffeur.
Before I knew it, a shiny Tesla Model X pulled up, and I was greeted by our lovely driver, Dajong. With just a small chit-chat, I discovered that the Skipper service includes a fleet of six vehicles—five Teslas and one Toyota Sienna, perfect for those needing a little extra accessibility. Dajong shared fun stories about the varied kinds of riders she’s encountered, from grocery shoppers to party-goers. One even asked for a ride to the ABC store right at opening! Now that’s using your time wisely!
With our first destination set, off we went to Sharon Corners, a mere 1.1 miles away. Just eight minutes later, we arrived at our shopping hotspot. Now, if I had driven in, I might have still been circling the parking lot trying to find a space!
Our second ride with Corey took us just one mile down the road to the popular BrickTop’s. In only five minutes, we made it! It turns out that Corey had some wild stories from the hectic Black Friday rush.
We attempted to grab a bite at BrickTop’s, but alas, it seemed the whole city had the same idea! So, we redirected to Williams Sonoma. Vladyslav arrived next to whisk us away to Sabor at Morrison, and being a fellow transit enthusiast, we had an engaging chat about life behind the wheel.
Finally, we embarked on our last ride, back to The Apex with Kostiantyn, bringing our little adventure full circle. Every driver I encountered genuinely loved their job, emphasizing how it was more than just a side hustle—it’s their primary gig.
So, how does the Skipper fare after my field tests? Here’s what I discovered:
According to the data I gathered from the SouthPark Community Partners’ CEO, Adam Rhew, the SouthPark Skipper has already delivered 1,842 rides in just the first couple of weeks! That averages out to about 77 passengers daily—not too shabby for a pilot program.
Now, here’s something really exciting! Two of my drivers mentioned that we could be seeing similar free shuttle services popping up in Ballantyne before long. Yep, you heard it here first!
Charlotte, in all its complexities, is evolving, and it looks like getting around is about to become a whole lot easier, thanks to innovative ideas like the SouthPark Skipper. If you haven’t already, give it a ride! Who knows—you might just find your new favorite travel buddy.
