News Summary

Charlotte has unveiled a new 1.5-mile section of the Stewart Creek Greenway, enhancing outdoor activities for residents. Featuring Mecklenburg County’s longest bridge, this expansion boosts the city’s greenway trails to over 74 miles, with plans for more development. The $7.5 million investment highlights Charlotte’s commitment to creating accessible recreational spaces for walking, jogging, and cycling enthusiasts, fostering a vibrant community and improved connectivity across neighborhoods.

Exciting News for Outdoor Enthusiasts in Charlotte!

Charlotte has just opened a brand-new section of the Stewart Creek Greenway, and it is set to transform the way residents can enjoy the outdoors. This new section extends a total of 1.5 miles and is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to creating a vibrant and connected community.

Explore the Beauties of the New Greenway

For those who love walking, jogging, and cycling, this new greenway section is a delightful addition. The highlight of the project is Mecklenburg County’s longest bridge in the greenway system, measuring an impressive 181 feet. This bridge is conveniently located near where Blue Blaze Brewing used to be and right by the Savona Mill. With its stunning design, the bridge offers not just a practical crossing but also a chance to soak in some beautiful views while enjoying a leisurely day in nature.

Investing in Community Recreation

The total cost for this new greenway expansion was about $7.5 million, a worthy investment for the community. Breaking it down, about $3.6 million was spent on a 1-mile stretch known as Stewart Creek Tributary 2, which connects Yellowstone Drive to Lakewood Avenue. The other $3.9 million was allocated for the half-mile stretch from State Street to Coronet Way. These significant investments highlight the city’s dedication to improving outdoor spaces for its residents and providing safe and accessible routes for all.

More Trails, More Fun!

With this new development, Charlotte is not slowing down. The city currently boasts over 74 miles of greenway trails and looks forward to reaching approximately 78-79 miles by the end of 2024. Already, approximately five miles of new greenway have been opened this year, with even more trails on the way. Residents can expect additional sections to become accessible by the end of the year, continuing the trend of expanding recreational spaces.

There are 16.3 miles of trails currently under construction, demonstrating ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity across the area. Future projects include connecting Keystone Court to Manning Drive with a 1.1-mile segment that is set to open in November at a cost of $3.7 million. Another 0.5-mile section from State Street to Coronet Way is planned, expected to run about $3.2 million.

Improving Connectivity for Everyone

In an exciting push towards community connection, a 1.5-mile stretch from Little Rock Road to Loy Court will cost approximately $5.5 million and will enhance access to local neighborhoods. An additional 0.8-mile section linking the Caldwell Station Greenway to the Northern Regional Recreation Center will be underway, with a budget of $3.3 million. Moreover, Segment 1B of the Huntersville greenway is projected to cost $1.3 million for its 0.6-mile stretch.

Creating Peaceful and Inviting Spaces

Each greenway features tranquil settings and spectacular views, which make it a pleasurable experience for everyone, whether they are on foot or bike. With each new trail and bridge, Charlotte is not just enhancing its biking and walking routes but is also fostering a vibrant community that encourages outdoor activities. The dedication to creating an interconnected network of greenways marks a pivotal moment in enhancing the overall quality of life in this beautiful city.

So grab your walking shoes or hop on a bike and explore the wonderful new section of the Stewart Creek Greenway! Charlotte is making strides—literally—toward a happier and healthier community.
