CHARLOTTE, N.C. – As the temperatures continue to soar this summer, everyone is looking for ways to keep the oppressive heat outside their houses. To help you out, here are a handful of tips to keep your house cool during this heatwave, as shared by Brandon McBrier, owner of Footprints Floors Charlotte.
One of the primary ways to ensure a cooler home is by allowing your air-conditioning system to do its job efficiently. You can do this by making sure the air vents are fully open and that the return air supply isn’t obstructed by any furniture or decor.
While enjoying the sunny weather sounds pleasant, the heat it brings can quickly turn your home into a sweltering oven. By keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the sunlight hours, you can block the heat and maintain a cool temperature within your home.
While it might seem unnoticeable at times, ceiling fans can add a considerable cooling effect. They create a breeze and distribute cooled air throughout the room, proving helpful in maintaining a lower temperature.
It’s a widely known fact that most electronics emit heat when they’re turned on. Limiting the use of heat-producing electronics and turning off lights when a space isn’t occupied or during the daytime can significantly reduce the overall heat within a property.
Thermostats play a critical role in a cooling system. McBrier recommends that the thermostat fan be set to “on” instead of “auto” to ensure constant air circulation, which can significantly contribute to maintaining cooler indoor temperatures.
Homeowners planning renovations this summer might want to consider the type of flooring installed. McBrier advises that laminate flooring distributes heat and coolness effectively, benefiting the home’s insulation and providing coolness to your feet. On the other hand, hardwood flooring does not retain heat and can stay cool, especially if not directly exposed to sunlight, and more so when in lighter shades that deflect sunlight.
