CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a striking example of the challenges some residents face, the Tanglewood Apartments community in north Charlotte has become a focal point for concerns about living conditions. Stacy Carter, one of the residents, opened her door to share the plight of her home, described in her own words: “Now brace yourselves, I have every roach possible in here.” Along with the unwanted critters, Carter revealed that her apartment is also plagued by gnats and mold. She explained, “We have mold through almost every wall in our apartment, we have asked numerous times for these problems to be fixed.”
Adding to the distress, many residents have recently received a 30-day notice to vacate their homes by November 30. Christopher Sanders, another resident, expressed his frustration, stating, “They were telling me I have to move, and they took my money.” The Tanglewood Apartments were recently purchased by new owners, taking over from a previous management that struggled with multiple code violations.
In an effort to understand the situation better, city officials reached out to the new owners this past week. It was reported that the new owners are committing $2 million toward repairs to improve conditions at the complex. However, they also stated that evictions will only affect residents who are behind on their rent payments. This statement has been met with skepticism from the residents themselves.
Residents like Carolyn Toney are not buying the official narrative, insisting that their rights are being overlooked. She declared, “They need to stop lying. We would like to know where is our mayor and our council person that we voted for?” In the face of this uncertainty, feelings of helplessness are rife among the tenants. Local resident Tonya Hamilton voiced a poignant concern, “Where is everybody going to go? You got disabled people here who also received that notice.”
In response to the mounting tensions, the city has activated its displacement protocol, assuring residents that “our partners will be on-site this week to coordinate support activities including meeting with residents.” This will ideally help residents figure out their next steps and provide the necessary support they need during this difficult time.
As the situation continues to unfold, many are left waiting for further details from the new management of Tanglewood Apartments. Residents are hoping for timely communication and, more importantly, solutions to the pressing concerns that have made living in their homes increasingly unbearable.
While the community faces a challenging future filled with uncertainty, the resilience and unity among the residents present a beacon of hope. Many are banding together, advocating for their rights and seeking justice in the face of adversity.
As updates come in, the priority remains clear: ensuring that all residents have a safe and healthy place to call home. While the new owners attempt to address complaints, community voices are crucial in ensuring that no one is left behind in figuring out what comes next.
