CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This Sunday, an inspiring event is set to take place that you won’t want to miss! Rose Carty Armstrong is taking her passion for helping others and turning it into action by organizing the first-ever Terry Fox Run right here in Charlotte. While many in the U.S. may not know Terry’s story, in Canada, he’s celebrated as a national hero and a beacon of hope in the fight against cancer.
Terry Fox was not just an ordinary citizen; he was someone who turned tragedy into a mission. After losing his leg to bone cancer, he aimed to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Though he didn’t complete his epic journey due to the cancer spreading to his lungs, he managed to raise an incredible amount of awareness and funds before he passed away. More than 40 years later, his legacy lives on through the Terry Fox Run, which has now become a global event dedicated to cancer research.
“These runs aren’t widely known in the U.S., but they have been making a significant impact up north,” says Armstrong. During the event, they hope to raise both money and awareness, as well as to honor those who are battling cancer. Participants will have the opportunity to purchase a special Terry Fox T-shirt. The red tees will be gifted to those currently battling cancer, while the blue shirts will be available for purchase to anyone looking to contribute to the fight against this illness.
What’s more? The Terry Fox Run has caught the attention of numerous celebrities! Big names like Ryan Reynolds, Celine Dion, and Michael Bublé have lent their support to the initiative, helping to boost its profile and reach even more people. “We have gained so much notoriety,” Armstrong adds with a smile. “It’s heartwarming to see such widespread support for Terry’s vision.”
Now, let’s talk logistics! The event is set to take place at Frank Liske Park in Concord, specifically at the Homebuilder shelter. Make sure to arrive early to get registered!
Don’t forget to bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated during the event. Every little bit helps, and your participation matters. Cancer affects so many lives, and this is a great way to come together as a community, to have fun, and support a cause that impacts us all.
As Armstrong poignantly puts it, “It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t been impacted by cancer.” The Terry Fox Run offers a chance to honor those lost and support those in the fight for their lives. Let’s unite on Sunday to make a difference—just as Terry Fox inspired a nation to do so many years ago!
For any last-minute updates, check back before Run Day to confirm all the details. We hope to see you there, ready to take strides against cancer!
