Thanksgiving Spirit: Chef Ernie Adler’s Heartwarming Initiative to Support Ukrainian Refugees in Charlotte

Thanksgiving Spirit: Chef Ernie Adler’s Heartwarming Initiative in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the holiday spirit begins to fill the air, many families in Charlotte are preparing to gather around the dinner table, sharing stories of gratitude and merriment. For Chef Ernie Adler, however, this Thanksgiving brings with it a wonderful opportunity to extend these traditions to those who are in need, particularly families who have recently relocated from Ukraine.

Creating a New Tradition

Over the past two years, Adler has made it his mission to deliver full Thanksgiving meals to Ukrainian refugee families, helping them create their own holiday memories in a new country. Now, he’s reaching out to the Charlotte community, inviting local families to join him in this heartwarming initiative of “paying it forward.”

“Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays,” said Adler, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “You stay in your pajamas, watch the parade, watch some football, and have a great dinner. Well, why not extend that and teach our tradition to people who don’t know it?”

A Journey of Compassion

Adler’s journey of giving back started overseas. In 2022, he dedicated his efforts to World Central Kitchen, helping to feed Ukrainian refugees fleeing the ongoing war. After witnessing the resilience of these families, he and his wife, Amy, began welcoming refugee families into their own Thanksgiving festivities, serving homemade meals while connecting on a personal level.

“The first year, we welcomed a family and taught them about Thanksgiving,” Adler shared. “This year, we hope to grow that effort with more Charlotte families getting involved.”

Join the Movement

Chef Adler is inviting families in Charlotte to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal and deliver it to recently relocated refugees. Remarkably, he estimates that the cost to prepare and share this special meal is under $75. “We’re already making one Thanksgiving dinner—why not make a second? It’s a way to show that Charlotte is a place of welcome,” he added, emphasizing the simplicity of spreading holiday cheer.

A Meaningful Experience

For many, including Maria, a Ukrainian refugee who experienced her first Thanksgiving with Chef Adler, the day is about so much more than just food. “When Ernie arrived with food, his smile and sparkles in his eyes made us feel we were not alone,” she recalled. Her children, still adjusting to their new lives in America, found warmth and kindness that transcended mere sustenance.

The Warmth of Kindness

Adler passionately believes that while everyone faces challenges, taking the time to help others can illuminate the path of gratitude. “As tough as things get, somebody always has it tougher,” he affirmed. “Doing this makes your Thanksgiving even better—you know you made a difference.”

Expanding the Vision

With a desire to expand this beautiful tradition within Charlotte, Chef Adler hopes to inspire others one meal at a time. “All you’ve got to do is make a second meal, bring it to them, and you’ll have the best Thanksgiving ever,” he encouraged, inviting community members to join him in spreading goodness during this festive season.

Get Involved!

Are you interested in joining Chef Adler’s Thanksgiving Meal initiative? It’s easy! Simply prepare an extra Thanksgiving meal and reach out to local refugee families. Together, we can create a community filled with kindness, compassion, and—most importantly—gratitude this holiday season. Let’s make it a Thanksgiving to remember!
