CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Life can take unexpected turns, sometimes with devastating consequences. Such is the case for Sherika Sheppard, who now finds herself grappling with intense grief following a tragic incident that claimed the life of her beloved mother, Wanda Sheppard.
With tears in her eyes and a heavy heart, Sherika spoke candidly about the unbearable void left in her life. “I can’t process it, my heart stopped, and it was just like I couldn’t breathe,” she shared, struggling to find the right words. The emotional impact of losing her mother has left Sherika searching for solace, wishing for just one more moment to express her love and appreciation. “It hurts,” she admitted. “I wish I could have said more to her before she had left me.”
The heartbreaking events unfolded during the early hours of December 9, when the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a report of a hit-and-run near Caldwell Street. Sadly, they discovered Wanda unresponsive and lying on the road, suffering from severe injuries. “Actually seeing her face — that is what did it for me, that image it burns me,” Sherika recounted. With a heavy sigh, she added, “It’s like the only thing I can do is cry.”
Wanda was immediately taken to the hospital, but regardless of medical efforts, she tragically succumbed to her injuries. Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored SUV flee the scene after striking Wanda, prompting a desperate search for the driver.
Detectives are currently on the hunt for the vehicle involved in this tragic hit-and-run. Recently, they released a photograph of a black SUV that they believe to be connected to the incident. Experts suspect this vehicle could be a 2011-2017 Nissan Juke, potentially showing damage on the front right fender and windshield area. The police are urging anyone with information to step forward.
Sherika expressed hopes that the person responsible for her mother’s death might feel the weight of their guilt and make the right choice. “They just kept going like she was nothing, but she was somebody—she was somebody to me, my mother,” she poignantly stated, urging the suspect to take accountability for their actions. “Please turn yourself in.”
If you or someone you know has a lead on the whereabouts of the vehicle or details regarding the driver, you’re encouraged to contact Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Remember, your call is completely anonymous, and any useful information could lead to a cash reward upon arrest.
As the Sheppard family prepares to say their final goodbyes to Wanda, they carry the heavy burden of loss with them. Navigating through this emotional time is never easy. Thus, a local initiative named More Than A Number is stepping forward to assist families like the Sheppards. This unique program aims to highlight the stories, memories, and the real lives behind the statistics of tragic events like this.
If you wish to share who Wanda was and the impact she had on those around her, please consider sending memories or photos to the initiative. Your contribution might help others connect with the heartache of losing a loved one in such a sensitive manner.
Charlotte is a city that embodies warmth and spirit, but recent events serve as a grim reminder of life’s fragility. In unity, the community can help support families navigating through tragedy while holding accountable those whose actions bring heartbreak. Sherika Sheppard and her family hope for justice, closure, and ultimately, peace in the face of unimaginable loss.
