Charlotte, NC – An 18-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Luke Castaneros, was arrested by campus police after he allegedly entered a women’s bathroom and recorded individuals using the restroom. The incident took place in Colvard North, a central building on campus.
According to university police, the situation unfolded when a concerned individual noticed Castaneros in the women’s restroom and promptly alerted authorities. Upon their arrival, the police allege that Castaneros confessed to the act of secretly recording. The university maintains a comprehensive security camera system across its campus to assist in identifying and apprehending suspects.
The news of the incident has elicited strong reactions from students. Many expressed disappointment, with one student, Avery Flynn, sharing, “Honestly, in today’s world, nothing like that is surprising anymore. It’s still incredibly disappointing.” Another student, Sophia Diciaula, noted that bathrooms can feel unsafe, stating, “Bathrooms are kind of a scary place because there (are) a bunch of stalls and I always look to see if there (are) people in the stalls.”
Amira Hartman, a fellow student, echoed similar sentiments about personal safety, emphasizing the need to be aware of one’s surroundings. “You have to be aware of your surroundings and be ready for anything. It’s a sad reality,” she remarked.
While university officials have not provided detailed comments regarding this specific case, they indicated that generally, a suspect involved in such serious allegations would face immediate suspension. Following his arrest, Castaneros appeared in court on Thursday afternoon, where he was charged with felony secret peeping. He was issued a $50,000 unsecured bond.
The court has made it clear that Castaneros will face arrest for trespassing if he returns to the campus grounds. The incident has raised awareness about personal safety in shared spaces, particularly bathrooms, which have become a focal point of concern for many students at UNC Charlotte.
As part of ongoing security measures, the university continues to encourage students to report any suspicious activity. The rigorous use of surveillance and policing efforts aims to deter similar actions in the future.
The arrest of Luke Castaneros serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in maintaining safety on campus. As the community processes the incident, many students feel the need to enhance their personal safety practices, recognizing the reality of such situations in today’s world.
