CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) has officially kicked off the largest fundraising effort in its history, named For the Love of Charlotte. The campaign aims to raise an impressive total of $500 million to support the educational growth and community engagement of its students.
The main objective of the campaign is to create a strong pipeline of young professionals who graduate from UNC Charlotte and remain in the local Charlotte community. Chancellor Sharon Gaber emphasized this connection by stating, “We are a major source of talent in this community with 180,000 alums. Sixty to 70% of our alums love to stay in the Charlotte metro area, so we’re fueling the workforce there.”
The campaign has outlined three key areas of focus: student success and opportunity, academic leadership, and enhancing campus and community vibrancy. The first focus, student success, aims to provide resources, mentorship opportunities, and potential scholarships to students. Academic leadership will concentrate on developing new academic programs and advancing research initiatives.
With regards to community vibrancy, the campaign will foster partnerships with local organizations based in Charlotte, reinforcing the university’s commitment to improving the community. Leaders of the initiative are optimistic that this approach will strengthen the connection between the university and its surrounding environment.
As of now, the university has successfully raised $250 million as part of this ambitious campaign. University officials are aiming to reach the remaining goal of $250 million by 2029, which will allow the institution to directly invest in the outlined initiatives. Chancellor Gaber indicated that the university could start utilizing the funds from the campaign as early as next year to begin executing these initiatives.
“We are a relatively young university,” Gaber remarked. “It is incumbent upon us to increase what we’re doing to be able to help our students and be able to do more in Charlotte, for Charlotte.” This statement reinforces UNC Charlotte’s determination not only to uplift its student body but also to contribute positively to the local community.
The For the Love of Charlotte campaign symbolizes a significant commitment from UNC Charlotte to enhance educational opportunities and community engagement. With an ambitious fundraising target and clear objectives, university leaders are hopeful that this initiative will pave the way for future success for both the institution and the Charlotte area.
