Grocery bill still going up? Almost all of us are complaining about our grocery bills these days, and are looking for every way to lower them. But a new report says some things you buy are a waste of money.
It’s tough to decide how many vegetables to buy…. and putting together kids lunches can be a lot of work. But a report in Readers Digest says by avoiding some pre packaged items, you can easily reduce your bill. They include pre cut foods, which can cost three times the price. For instance, a 3 pound bag of apples costs around $5. But it says the same amount of pre-cut apple slices can run $20.
Another needless expense: Out of season produce. It says strawberries often cost $1.99 a pint in summer, but $5 a pint by winter. And spices: They can run $5 a tin in the supermarket…. but less than a dollar at Aldi.
And from the” doesn’t that stink” file, some of the grocery items with the biggest markups. Readers Digest says most are items that come in individual servings, such as rice, and macaroni and cheese. One individual packet can cost as much as a full box. For microwave popcorn, where a single packet can cost as much as 30 ounce bag of kernels.
So Readers Digest says avoid individual packets if you can — and split up larger packages– and you’ll reduce your grocery bill immediately. That way you don’t waste your money.
