West Charlotte Man Beaten To Death, Family Says Over Kids Fight
April 8, 2024

CHARLOTTE – Jamesha West is looking for justice after her husband, Tariq Stokes, was beaten to death outside their West Charlotte home. Their daughter remembers him as always being by her side.
Princess LeAnn Stokes and a friend were approached, her mom says, by younger boys who were trying to hit on them. When the girls rejected the boys, West says they went to get friends and family to confront the girls.
“My bathroom window was open and I can hear my daughter screaming, ‘Call my mom, call my mom’”, said West. “So I screamed from the bathroom, ‘Tariq, Princess is screaming.’”
West says Stokes went running out of the house to protect his daughter. “The women and children were still on us and the men were kind of running back, like retreating from where they came from”, said West, “and they told me, ‘Hey, go get your man up off that ground’.”
West saw her husband in the bushes. She tells WCCB he was able to get up the hill to their home, but collapsed as soon as he got through the door. “He opened his eyes and he looked at me and he said, ‘Meesh, I’m not going to make it. I love y’all.’ and then his eyes went into the back of his head and he was unresponsive from then on.”
Now, West, who is still recovering, wants justice. “No one has spoken up that witnessed it. No one has turned in ring cameras, nothing. No one’s saying anything.”
A grieving daughter, who lost her father the day after her 13th birthday, now has one goal. “I’m gonna make him proud. I’m gonna keep pushing. I’m gonna finish school and everything I even want me to do. He wouldn’t want me to just sit here sad and stuff, because he knows I cared about him.”
