Charlotte is buzzing with excitement as the city takes one step closer to welcoming its very first Whataburger restaurant! This Texas-based burger chain has been a hot topic since discussions began, and fans are eager to enjoy their famous burgers.
Recently, a significant milestone was reached when a building permit was officially issued for Whataburger at the Clear Creek Crossing Development, located at 12809 Albemarle Road. This is fantastic news for locals who have been eagerly awaiting this opening, as approvals and permits can sometimes take longer than expected.
Remember back in March? That’s when city zoning officials gave green lights to Whataburger’s Land Development Construction Plan for this very site. Whataburger fans aren’t the only ones in for a treat; the Clear Creek Crossings development is also set to feature a Publix grocery store, which is expected to open its doors in March. Other exciting businesses like a Great Clips location, a Heartland Dental office, Venice Nails, and an unnamed bank will join Whataburger in this bustling area.
As with many projects, the road to opening isn’t always smooth. A recent inquiry to Whataburger’s public relations department for comments about the expected opening didn’t yield a response just yet. Similarly, a message sent to Ryan Stahl, a representative from Clear Creek Crossings, went unanswered. However, it didn’t go unnoticed when the Charlotte Ledger newsletter shared a post about the newly issued permit—being in the loop has never been more exciting!
Whataburger is not just stopping in Charlotte. Plans are underway to expand their presence further into the region. Already confirmed are locations coming to Raleigh, Durham, and Cary, with openings anticipated as soon as 2025. Sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to for all the burger enthusiasts in North Carolina!
Meanwhile, the flavor has already reached South Carolina, where loyal fans flocked to newly opened locations in Spartanburg and Columbia. There were long lines, proving the high demand for Whataburger in the area!
In an interesting twist, it was reported back in September 2022 that permits were also filed for another Whataburger location in Charlotte—a former bank building situated at 5301 South Boulevard. Currently, that property remains available for leasing at Tyvola Square. While it’s not uncommon for such projects to stretch out over years—especially since the COVID-19 pandemic caused numerous delays—hunger for Whataburger continues to grow.
When discussing Whataburger, it’s essential to clarify that they are not to be confused with What-A-Burger, a separate chain that has been serving the delightful burger-loving community of North Carolina since 1956. Founded by E.L. “Eb” Bost and C.W. Bost, What-A-Burger is not affiliated with the Texas chain. That legal side of things seems to be unfolding, as there’s a trademark infringement lawsuit currently in the courts.
As Charlotte awaits the arrival of Whataburger, electric anticipation fills the air. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the Whataburger phenomenon, it’s a thrilling time to be a burger enthusiast in the Queen City! Keep your eyes peeled; the opening of this restaurant could be just around the corner, bringing with it delicious burgers and plenty of buzzing conversations!
