A winter weather system has prompted widespread school closures across North and South Carolina on January 22, due to frigid temperatures and expected snow flurries. Districts are taking precautions to ensure student safety, with some opting for remote learning while others cancel classes entirely. Alerts indicate that temperatures will drop to single digits in some areas, with light snow accumulation expected. Local school districts, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Cabarrus County, are adapting their schedules to address the severe weather conditions.
As the chilly winds blow through the Carolinas, school districts throughout both North Carolina and South Carolina are taking necessary precautions by canceling classes on Wednesday, January 22. The reason? An uninvited winter weather system that is sending frigid temperatures and possible snow flurries our way!
The Charlotte area has been put under winter weather advisories, which are expected to last until the morning of January 22. On top of that, a severe cold warning has been issued for western parts of North Carolina, remaining in effect until noon the same day. Residents can expect temperatures to plummet to single digits in the mountains and north of Interstate 40. Further south, areas including the bustling Charlotte Metro could be stuck in the teens.
Snow seems to be part of the forecast as well, with light flurries projected to start after 5 p.m. on Tuesday and potentially continuing into Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, communities located in the southern and eastern Piedmont, as well as parts of the northern Coastal Plain, are predicted to receive anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of snow by the time Wednesday rolls around. It’s worth noting—any accumulation that does occur is likely to freeze, making roads even more hazardous.
In response to the impending conditions, several school districts are modifying their schedules. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have opted for a complete cancellation of classes on Wednesday. It’s projected that temperatures in Charlotte won’t even rise above freezing during the day, making the decision to close schools rather sensible.
On the other hand, Cabarrus County Schools have chosen to shift to remote learning for the day, ensuring that students can learn from the comfort of their homes while avoiding icy roads. Meanwhile, the Chester County School District has decided to delay the start of school by two hours on Wednesday—better late than never, right?
More closures include the Clover School District, Fort Mill School District, Gaston County Schools, and Kannapolis City Schools, all of which will be closed on Wednesday. As for students in Lancaster County School District, they can expect a day of e-learning, with school facilities closed across the board. In Rock Hill, students will also participate in e-learning on the same day, halting all extracurricular activities as well.
And it doesn’t stop there! Rowan-Salisbury Schools declared a closure for students on Wednesday due to snow covering the roads. Similarly, Union County Public Schools will also be canceling classes, and no make-up days will be required this time around.
Parents and students in the York School District should take note that while school is canceled on Wednesday, a plan for asynchronous e-learning has been set for Monday, February 3, 2025, to make up for the lost day of learning.
It’s clear that the winter weather has painted a chilly picture across the Carolinas, and school districts are reacting quickly to ensure the safety and well-being of students. While many families are left to figure out impromptu snow day plans or remote learning arrangements, let’s hope everyone stays warm and cozy during this frosty spell!
